Why bilingual education is important to me?
Is bilingual education important to you? Maybe not, but to me, as a bilingual class student, it is. Why? It's because it can increase learning of academic area, improve your own language skills and help with your job or career.
Bilingual education is classes taught in two languages, native language and target language. When I first came to the United States, I didn't know anything about English, even the ABC. There were no bilingual classes at the school that I attended. I went to school everyday and sat in the class like a dummy. I didn't learn anything until after a few weeks when they started a bilingual class. Then I began to learn the vocabulary and math. Even though all books are English, with teacher explanation and help, I understood. I really learned many things, not even the English but also my native language. Because my teacher taught in two languages, it helped me to maintain my native language and improve English. I think that would also help me in the future. In that society and with much competition, many companies want to hire employees who know and speak more than one language. So if you know more than one language, you would have more opportunity to find a good job or career. Also if you return to your native country. But you forget your native language, how are you going to communicate with them if they don't speak English.
If I were not in a bilingual class, I would not know that much English and also my native language. Therefore bilingual education is very important to me.
